Alternative Software is a British software developer and publisher company founded in the United Kingdom in 1985. The name of founder of this company is Roger Hulley. From its founding to the early 1990s, the company released more than a hundred games for 8-bit computer formats. In addition to releasing its own games, it reworked and released software from other developers and publishers. The company grew rapidly in 1988 when various companies including Piranha Software, Audiogenic, Incentive, and Bubble Bus acquired the rights to republish their games. In late 1988, it was promoted as the number one software house on 7 out of 8 charts on Gallup market share charts. It also showed that it was able to capture an average of 11.2% market share with 10.5% against Mastertronic, known as its closest competitor. In 1989, Alternative Software started to focus on popular children's television characters and produced such titles. Thus, Alternative Software company released games called Postman Pat, Count Duckula, Fireman Sam, Sooty, and The Wombles. In an interview with the company's founder, Roger Hulley, in 2015, it was said that Alternative Software had a 17% share in the budget games industry until 1990.
